In 2015, Peterborough Regional Health Centre’s (PRHC) senior leadership team and Board of Directors committed to working toward the development and implementation of a comprehensive Seniors’ Care Strategy. In 2017, we launched a refreshed Strategic Plan where we further committed to developing a Seniors’ Care Centre of Excellence at PRHC.

The Peterborough region is among the fastest-growing communities in the country, as well as the oldest population demographically in Canada, with 22 per cent of local residents over the age of 65. As our community continues to grow and age, as our patients’ healthcare needs evolve and become more complex, it is critical that we continue to transform, innovate and invest in programs and partnerships that will ensure we are able to provide the best possible care and support for our older adult patients, today and into the future.

In the last few years PRHC has:

  • Opened two specialized inpatient units: the Geriatric Assessment & Behavioural Unit and the Geriatric Assessment & Treatment Unit. Each of these units is staffed by an interdisciplinary team that provides care for frail and behaviourally-challenged seniors.

  • We have recruited new geriatricians and other specialized staff to support enhanced care for our senior patients.

  • Opened Psychiatric Assessment Services for the Elderly (PASE) – an outreach program that offers geriatric mental health assessment, consultation and education services for people 65 and older who have developed a mental health condition later in life.

  • Earned widespread attention across the province as a result of our innovative partnership with Peterborough Housing Corporation to open an 80-unit supportive seniors’ housing development in this community.

  • Launched the Hospital Elder Life Program, or HELP, an innovative delirium-prevention program designed to improve the hospital experience of older patients.

  • Launched the Geriatric Emergency Department Intervention (GEDI) consultation team – a group of specially-trained healthcare professionals who provide screening, assessment and care planning services for frail, older adults who arrive in the Emergency Department

The team at PRHC, together with the collaboration and support of our community partners, has already reached so many important milestones as part of our seniors’ care strategy and this area of care continues to be a priority for PRHC.
