WHAT WE OFFER
Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) has an Orthopedic Rapid Access Clinic that provides consultation for individuals with hip and/or knee arthritis. Patients are assessed to determine if they are a surgical candidate for joint replacement surgery.
Patients who are candidates for joint replacement are booked to see an orthopedic surgeon. If you do require surgery, PRHC provides post-operative care for patients who have a joint replacement surgery.
Patients who are not deemed surgical candidates at this time receive recommendations from our healthcare team in how to help manage symptoms.
ORTHOPEDIC RAPID ACCESS CLINIC
This clinic is staffed by registered physiotherapists who help to reduce the wait time for a patient who is a surgical candidate to see a surgeon for joint replacement.
Patients qualify to access this service if they are experiencing pain in their hip or knee due to osteoarthritis.
Family physicians or nurse practitioners must make a referral to the LHIN Central Intake office for patients to be seen by the orthopedic rapid access clinic. The referral is reviewed for information and then forwarded to the clinic.
ORTHOPEDIC PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC
The Orthopedic Physiotherapy Clinic is where you’ll visit after your hip or knee surgery. This is an outpatient clinic for patients who have been discharged from the hospital following surgery.
This clinic is staffed by registered physiotherapists and registered practical nurses.
Patients qualify to access this service during their acute phase, post-operatively from their hip or knee total joint replacement surgery. Patients are encouraged to book their physiotherapy sessions in the physio clinic prior to their hip or knee surgery.
Patients who have had surgery at PRHC do not need to be referred, they can just book their appointments. Patients who have had surgery at another facility will need a referral from their surgeon in order for appointments to be booked.
The Cast Clinic plays an important role in the management and treatment of orthopedic issues. The cast clinic is staffed with Orthopedic Technologists and Orthopedic Surgeons. Orthopedic Technologists are skilled in applying casts, splints and fitting patients for a variety of equipment that will help with the healing process.
Patients qualify to access this service after either having orthopedic surgery or if they have been seen in the Emergency Department and are being referred to an orthopedic surgeon for follow up. Patients who have seen a plastic surgeon may also be referred to the cast clinic if they require a cast or splint after hand surgery.
