Post-anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU)

The nurses in the Post-Anesthetic Care Unit provide immediate post-operative recovery for surgical patients and for other patients who have received sedation e.g. for such procedures as ERCP, Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) and pacemaker insertion.

In the PACU we provide complete assessment and monitoring of our surgical patients. PACU has a very high nurse-to-patient ratio, which allows for diligent, critical care in the immediate post-operative period. PACU staff care for a variety of patients from children to adults recovering from a wide range of surgical procedures and tests.

Patients stay in PACU for varying lengths of time depending on the type of surgery and anesthetic they receive. Patients are discharged from PACU either to an inpatient surgical bed, if they are to be admitted post-operatively, or returned to the Surgical Outpatients Area. Relatives are not permitted into the PACU except under special circumstances.
