PRHC Appoints New Chief of Anesthesia

Dr. Michael Bengough joins PRHC as Chief of Anaesthesia with experience from Mayo Clinic

(Peterborough, ON) Alan Wotherspoon, PRHC Board Chair and Peter McLaughlin, Vice President, Chair MAC and Chief Medical Officer are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael Bengough as Chief of Anesthesia, effective April 1, 2014. Former Chief of Anaesthesia, Dr. Bob Hutton has stepped down following completion of a seven-year term.

Chiefs are physician leaders who are responsible for quality and safety of medical care, and are appointed by the hospital’s Board of Directors.  A search committee was established by the board and chaired by board director Lori Neill. The committee completed a comprehensive search – recommending Dr. Bengough as the preferred candidate.

Dr. Bengough completed his Bachelor of Engineering and Masters of Science in Chemistry at Queen’s University and continued his education at University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland where he completed his Bachelor of Medicine. Dr. Bengough concluded his education at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he completed his residency and fellowship in Anesthesia.  He began working as a Staff Anaesthesiologist and Intensive Care Physician and at PRHC in 2008.

“I am excited to accept this new responsibility and leadership position at our Regional Centre,” says Dr. Bengough. “My experience at PRHC has been an incredibly positive one, I look forward to this new challenge, and to continue the excellent leadership Dr. Bob Hutton provided during his exceptionally successful term.”

While at PRHC, he has been a part of various committees and working groups, and is assisting the PRHC in the writing of professional staff Policies and Procedures.  He was the physician lead for the purchase of the new Anaesthetic Gas Machines in 2013. Dr Bengough remains dedicated to his practice as a member of many medical associations and societies locally and nationally.

“We were delighted with the committee’s recommendation of Dr. Bengough as Chief of Anaesthesia, and we very pleased that he has accepted the position,” says Alan Wotherspoon. “The board looks forward to seeing Dr. Bengough rise to this exciting new challenge in his career and lead such an extensive program.”

PRHC is home to a wide-array of specialized surgical services, requiring support from the 16-member Anaesthesia Program, such as: Otolaryngology, Dentals, General, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Urology, minimally invasive, oncology, obstetrical support, pain clinics and Vascular.

“During his six years with PRHC, Dr. Bengough has demonstrated leadership and commitment to his colleagues, the Anaesthesia Program, and the hospital as a whole,” says Dr. Peter McLaughlin. “We are confident Mike will continue with the same influential leadership that PRHC has seen from Dr. Hutton.”
