Dr. Rola Shaheen joins Health Centre from Abu Dhabi;
maintains teaching ties with Harvard Medical School

Peterborough, ON – Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) is pleased to welcome Dr. Rola Shaheen to our medical leadership team. Dr. Shaheen joined the hospital in January 2015 as Chief and Medical Director of Diagnostic Imaging (DI).

Dr. Shaheen comes to Peterborough from her role as Chief of Women’s Imaging with Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi, a major government hospital, where she worked to champion women’s health care issues, including planning initiatives for breast imaging services and interventions.

“I am passionate about the role radiology plays in a hospital setting,” says Dr. Shaheen. “Diagnostic imaging is not a commodity; it is an important, multidisciplinary clinical service that provides our patients with the answers they need. Just ten years ago, the technology and equipment were not what they are today. In my role with PRHC, I am dedicated to the pursuit of continuous education and quality improvement in everything we do.”

In addition to her recent work overseas, Dr. Shaheen has served as Chief of Radiology and Director of Women’s Imaging with Harrington Memorial Hospital, a community hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Jordan University in Amman, followed by a year of medical school, an internship and a residency at the University of Toronto. Subsequent to her fellowship in women’s imaging with Harvard Medical School, she joined the faculty there for four years before she was recruited by the government of Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Shaheen continues to maintain ties with Harvard today as an instructor in Radiology, a role she has held for six years. She also teaches a global breast health course at the Harvard School of Public Health.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Shaheen join us with such a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion in her field,” says Nancy Martin-Ronson, VP, Professional & Diagnostic Services. “We are confident that Dr. Shaheen’s leadership and her vision for the future of Diagnostic Imaging at PRHC will prove to be a valuable asset to our patients moving forward.”

Dr. Shaheen is joined in Peterborough by her husband, Kamal Attyani, who has taken a project position with the hospital’s IT department, as well as their three young children, Ali, Sawsan and Mariam. The family has relocated to the area, and are planning to buy a home as soon as possible. “We are feeling at home in Peterborough already,” says Dr. Shaheen. “It’s promising.”
