Peterborough Regional Health Centre encourages family presence whenever possible. We know that having loved ones nearby helps our patients feel more comfortable and speeds up their recovery.
Peterborough Regional Health Centre offers open visiting hours. Each unit may have recommended visiting hours based on the specific needs of their patient population. For more information please speak with a healthcare team member on the patient unit.
The guiding principle for all visiting hour decisions is to maintain a balance between the patient’s need for effective care and the importance of family presence to the patient’s recovery.
Our visiting guidelines help preserve our patients' rights to privacy and confidentiality as well as helping protect everyone from infection and illness.
The number of people welcomed at the bedside at any one time will be determined in collaboration with the patient, family and interprofessional care team. In situations where there are shared rooms, negotiation with the other patient and his or her family may occur. To ensure safety, considerations will also be given to physicial limitations of the space.
Ask about access to “common areas” for visits of more than two people.
Please keep noise and activity to a minimum. Individuals who are feeling under the weather, including a cough or cold, are asked to delay visiting the Health Centre until the illness has passed.
Please note that PRHC is a Latex-Free Environment. Please do not bring latex balloons into the hospital because some patients have serious latex allergies. Foil and Mylar balloons are allowed.
The privacy and healing environment of all patients and their families must be respected at all times.
Children are welcome to visit when accompanied by a parent or guardian, though young children (under the age of 12) should not visit patients in isolation.
Visitors arriving at Peterborough Regional Health Centre after 9:00 p.m. are asked to please enter the hospital through the main doors on the hospital's west side, not through the Emergency Department. Please note that upon entering the hospital's main doors, you are on the 4th floor of the building.
After hours, the interior main doors are locked for the safety and security of our patients and staff. A video intercom is available just inside the main doors for visitors to contact hospital Security directly and arrange for entry.
After-hours visitors are encouraged to contact the patient's health care team to plan their visit in advance.
The most important ways you can hlep us prevent infections and illnesses from spreading in our hospitals are self screening for signs of illness and practicing good hand hygiene.
You should screen yourself and your children for any signs of illness before coming to hospital.

If you have any of these symptoms or are feeling at all unwell, we ask that you not visit our hospital until you have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours (2 days).
If you are sick, you may make our patients or our health care providers sick.

PRHC is a smoke-free and scent-free organization.
We ask that all visitors refrain from wearing scented products while at our hospital and from bringing highly-scented gifts and flowers for patients.
City of Peterborough Bylaw 11-074 prohibits smoking on PRHC property, and PRHC has a comprehensive no-smoking policy (1.A.140) that aligns with the city’s bylaw, and applies to all staff, physicians, volunteers, patients, and visitors to the Health Centre.
Smoking is prohibited on all hospital property, including inside the building, on all hospital grounds and in parking lots. A charge under the City Bylaw carries a fine of $305.

We understand that there can be exceptional circumstances that can apply to visiting a loved one. In this situation, please discuss your requests with the manager of the patient unit that is caring for your family member or friend.
There may be times when you or your loved ones need help to understand the healthcare system, or feel you need to voice a concern.
To do so, please first speak to the departmental staff or their manager. If you still have concerns after this, the Patient Relations Coordinator will be happy to assist.
