Preventing infection in a health care setting is very important. An infection can can be inconvenient, cause additional illness and lengthen hospital stay.

Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Infection:

  • Wash your hands well and often. Hand washing is the single most important method to prevent the spread of germs.
  • WASH: after using the toilet - after covering a cough or sneeze - before eating and drinking - when your hands become soiled.
  • HOW TO WASH: wet hands - add soap and rub all surfaces for 15 - 30 seconds - rinse well under running water - dry hands with paper towel and use paper towel to turn off taps - discard paper towel. Hand sanitizer is also available for use throughout the hospital
  • Encourage your family and visitors to wash their hands before and after their visit with you.
  • Ask family and visitors (children included) who are ill to reschedule their visit for when they are feeling better.
  • Ask visitors to closely supervise small children.
  • Ask your doctor about your special vaccination needs.
  • Keep yourself as healthy as possible: good nutrition - adequate  exercise, rest and sleep - good personal hygiene.
