Departments & Services - Psychiatric Assessment Services For The Elderly

Overview

This outreach program offers geriatric mental health assessment, consultation and education services, with limited capacity to provide treatment and case management services for people 65 and older. The program is separately mandated to offer Psychogeriatric Resource Consultant (PRC) services for the HKPR district.

Who

  • People 65 and older who have developed a mental health condition later in life
  • People from Peterborough, Haliburton, City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland counties
  • People living in their own home or a long-term care facility
  • Caregivers of the above
  • PRC provides consultation services to workers in LTC and community programs working in the long-term care sector

What

  • Individual assessment to address the client's issues through social work, nursing, and/or psychiatric input
  • Education, liaison and support for caregivers, involved professionals and community agencies
  • Recommendation of treatment, services, strategies or case management

When

  • Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where

  • Peterborough Regional Health Centre's PASE is now located in the main hospital building, on W3950
  • Please use the main entrance and the elevators to your immediate right upon entering. Go down one floor and look for wayfinding signage directing you to PASE.
  • Team members can travel to the client's home or LTC facility.
  • Satellite clinics are held monthly in Lindsay, Cobourg and Campellford and bi-monthly in Haliburton/Minden.
  • PRCs take turns being available by telephone for consultation each working day. Toll free: 1-866-877-2910.

How

  • Referrals may be made by anyone, although there must be a family physician whose agreement with the referral is required
  • To Access the Psychogeriatric Resource Coordinator (PRC) services a working caregiver may call to consult around the case. PRCs are not to see the client but support the working professional in their choices around assessment and treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cost to the client?
There are no fees to attend our Service for people with a current OHIP card. You are asked to bring your OHIP card with you to every appointment.

How is a referral made and who can make a referral?
See above.

Does the client need to have a family physician? Why?
Yes, the client needs a family physician. PASE consults to the physician and does not offer primary care for medical issues. Older adults often have co-morbid conditions which exacerbate the psychiatric symptoms and it is very important that there be a good physical work up to rule out organic causes of disease symptoms.

What is the length of wait for the program?
It depends on the need of the client, where the person lives and if they can travel to a satellite clinic. Please call to discuss wait times.

Are family members able to attend appointments with the client or speak to the psychiatrist on their own?
Clients are encouraged to bring their families to the appointment. If families are not comfortable in speaking in front of the client this should be made known prior to the appointment.

Does PASE complete capacity assessments?
No, PASE does not offer capacity assessments. If a capacity assessment is required you should call the Public Guardian and Trustee telephone number and they will walk you through the processes required and provide local professionals who will do the assessment on a fee for service basis. 1 800 366 0335
