Appliances |
You are welcome to bring your electric razors and hair dryers, but they must be checked and approved by building services before being used. Ask your nurse to arrange this check. Battery-operated appliances are preferred. |
Bank Machine |
24-hour bank machines are located in several areas in the hospital. Please ask for locations at the information desk. |
Bicycle Racks |
Please park your bike in the racks provided. Be sure to lock it. The Health Centre is not responsible for theft or damage. |
Books |
Book carts circulate on nursing units with paperbacks and magazines several times per week. |
Cafeteria |
The Cafeteria is located on the 4th floor. A coffee shop is located on the 3rd floor. Vending machines located in the emergency dept. are available 24 hours per day. |
Diagnostic Imaging / X-ray |
Located on the third floor. Provides a full range of services by referral. |

Discharge Information |
Most patients are discharged by 10 a.m. We recommend you arrange a family member or friend to take you home. Please make sure you have all your belongings and hospital cards as well as aftercare instructions and prescriptions as needed. It is important that you understand all instructions about your medication, diet, activity and return appointments. If you are unsure about anything, ask your nurse before you leave. |
Elevators |
Elevators are located throughout the Health Centre. If you are unsure which elevator to take, please ask at the information desk inside the front doors on the 4th floor. |
Fire Exits |
Fire exits are clearly marked throughout the Health Centre.
During a fire alarm, remain in your area unless instructed by staff or fire department personnel. |
Gift Shop |
Located on the 4th floor, across from Admitting, it has a large selection of gifts, cards, and personal items for sale. Profits are used to purchase equipment for the Health Centre.

Infection Control |
Preventing Infection is very important because an infection can lengthen your hospital stay. Infection can be inconvenient and cause additional illness.
Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Infection
- Wash your hands well and often. Hand washing is the single most important method to prevent the spread of germs.
- WASH - after using the toilet - after covering a cough or sneeze - before eating and drinking - when your hands become soiled.
- HOW TO WASH - wet hands - add soap and rub all surfaces for 15 - 30 seconds - rinse well under running water - dry hands with paper towel and use paper towel to turn off taps - discard paper towel. Alcohol rinse is also available for use
- Encourage your family and visitors to wash their hands before and after their visit with you.
- Ask family and visitors (children included) who are ill to reschedule their visit for when they are feeling better.
- Ask visitors to closely supervise small children.
- Ask your doctor about your special vaccination needs.
- Keep yourself as healthy as possible - good nutrition - adequate exercise, rest and sleep - good personal hygiene.

Interpreters for Hearing Impaired |
Sign language interpreters can be booked by calling The Canadian Hearing Society at 743-1573. The hospital TTY number is 876-5141. Other aids to assist people with a hearing loss are available at PRHC - contact a Speech-Language Pathologist. |

Multi-Faith Centre |
Members of our hospital spiritual care team are available seven days a week. After hours, we have On Call service available through Switchboard. It is important that you let your own spiritual care provider know of your hospitalization so that they will know to visit you during your hospital stay. | | |
Mutual Respect |
Peterborough Regional Health Centre has a policy to ensure patients and staff have an environment free of harassment and discrimination. Physical or verbal abuse of staff, patients, family members or visitors will not be tolerated. Any person who verbally or physically threatens or attacks another, or harms Health Centre property, may be reported to the police. |
Newspapers |
Local and national newspapers are available from coin boxes in the hopsital. For locations, ask at the information desk. |
Nutritional Services |
Most patients will receive their meals by tray service during the following times:
Breakfast: 7:30 a.m to 9:15 a.m.
Lunch: 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Supper: 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
If you would like to be seen by the dietitian or dietetic technician, please inform your nurse. |

There may be times when you or your family members need help in unerstanding the health care system or voicing a concern.
To do so, first speak to the departmental staff or to their Manager. If they have been unsuccessful helping you, the Patient Relations Coordinator is happy to assist. Our goal is to ensure our care is in accordance with appropriate professional practice standards.
Patient Relations Coordinator
- is available to all PRHC patients and families and community members who have questions, compliments or concerns. (Pre-arranged appointments preferred).
- can explain Health Centre policies and procedures
- investigates issues objectively
- may recommend a meeting with you, your family members and appropriate care team members
- can answer questions about services available at Peterborough Regional Health Centre
- follows up on concerns so that management, physicians and staff are aware of issues and will make improvements where appropriate
- can arrange for a staff member to review information on your chart with you

Peterborough Regional Health Centre is committed to protecting your privacy. In order to provide you with the best possible care, it is important that we have access to your personal health information.
We collect, use, disclose, retain and protect your information in keeping with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (2004).
You have the right to know how we may use and give out your personal health information and how you can get access to it. Hospital staff are not allowed to collect patient's personal health information where it is not necessary or to collect, use or give out more information than is necessary.
You may ask to access, ask to correct your personal health records or remove your consent for some of the uses.
As part of our Privacy program we have Health Information Privacy posters throughout the hospital, privacy brochures available and a Privacy Contact Person.

Room Charges and Payment |
The Health Centre will make every effort to place you in your requested accommodation (ward, semi private, private) upon admission. Admitting or Cashier's Office staff will require you to sign for the type of accommodation requested. If your choice of room is unavailable when you are admitted, you will be moved when a bed is available.
It is your responsibility to check with your insurance provider to determine what insurance coverage you have. OHIP covers only standard ward care for Ontario Residents with a valid OHIP card. You will be responsible for all charges on requested accommodations not covered by OHIP or your insurance provider.
If you wish to change your type of accommodation or have any financial questions, please contact the Cashier's Office.

Televisions and IBT's |
PRHC is proud to offer Integrated Bedside Terminal (IBT) through TELUS, for inpatient use. For safety reasons, personal televisions are not permitted. To contact the Integrated Bedside Terminal representatives or get help if you are experiencing technical difficulties, follow the instructions, or call the number on the screen. |
Valuables |
Please leave money, credit cards, jelellry and valuable papers at home.
NOTE: Dentures and eye glasses are valuable too! Keep them safe! The hospital is not responsible for any lost valuables. |
Visiting Hours |
Visiting hours on most units are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
We ask that only two visitors be at the bedside at any one time to be sure roommates have the rest they require. Ask about common patient areas for visits of more than two people. Please keep noise and activity to a minimum and do not visit if you have a cold or contagious illness.
After hours, only the Emergency entrance is accessible. |

What to Bring for Overnight Stay |
All you need are your pyjamas or nightgown, a bathrobe, slippers (with non-slip soles) and toiletries (such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, brush or comb).
Please leave valuables at home. |
