The PRHC Emergency Department provides unscheduled emergent, urgent and non-urgent patient care to 70,000 adults and children per year. It is the only emergency care facility located in Peterborough.
ED staff assess and treat a complete range of patients from the region. The ED has an inter-professional team consisting of physicians, nurses, clerical, allied staff (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, clergy, laboratory, GEM, CCAC, environmental services, EMS, respiratory therapy, patient flow facilitators, PEAT, security, and pharmacy) as well as volunteers.
Neurosurgical, major trauma and burn emergencies are treated in our department. If required, these patients can be transferred through CritiCall by air or land ambulance to regional accepting facilities, predominantly in Toronto or Kingston.
As the District Stroke centre for this region, PRHC provides emergency stroke care to patients from Peterborough and four surrounding hospitals (Ross Memorial, Northumberland Hills, Minden, and Campbellford).
Over the past year, the ED has participated in the provincial ED Process Improvement Plan (PIP) and has achieved or exceeded several of its wait time goals and targets.
