What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.
TYPE 1 DIABETES (or insulin-dependent diabetes) occurs when the pancreas no longer produces any or very little insulin. The body needs insulin to use sugar as an energy source. Type 1 Diabetes usually develops in childhood or adolescence and affects 10% of people with diabetes.
TYPE 2 DIABETES (or non-insulin-dependent diabetes) occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to meet the body's needs or the insulin is not used effectively. Type 2 usually occurs later in life and affects 90% of people with diabetes. In recent years there has been an increase in Type 2 diabetes in children.
The DEC provides counseling to persons with Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy), over the age of 18, interested family members as well as other health professionals. PDEC provides counseling and ongoing support to those under the age of 18 with diabetes.
